East Haddam Cleanup

Compatriots,

Four of us made some great progress last Saturday on the riverside of the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse property. We cut down the underbrush and tree saplings, so they won't block the river over time.

Helping for the day were:

Cliff Van Dyke
Bradley Gehan
Daniel Gehan
Stephen Shaw

We have a long way to go. If you would like to help this Saturday the 14th, we will be starting at 9am again. Plan to bring lopers, hand saws, pruners and some good boots for the steep hill.

Patriotically,

Stephen P. Shaw

In New London, Stephen and I tore down the chimney to the base of the second floor. We had a major leak in the roof around the chimney and we found that there should be a fireplace up there as well. After removing it we found that the original was much smaller. The details keep adding up.

Today was incredible in New London, when the cruise ship Maasdam came to port for the day. Dian Locke and I had 328 visitors from 9am to 4:30pm.
Great people from all over the country. We have two more ships coming in during the month of Sept and Oct.

School Day at the Schoolhouse - East Haddam

Compatriots,

I want to give a big thank you to the color guard members who helped with a great program at the schoolhouse on Friday June 1st. We had 100 3rd graders from East Haddam and about 20 adults all morning. They were able to learn from the colonial doctor, flags of the time, musketry, Governor Trumbull and then Nathan Hale in the schoolhouse.

Bunker Hill Day Report

Compatriots of the Connecticut Line,

The Connecticut Line had a great BUNKER HILL DAY today commemorating the 232nd Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, the first major battle of the American Revolution, June 17, 1775.

We received great publicity, and we were able to see the NEW Bunker Hill Museum.

We also placed a wreath at the Connecticut Gate on behalf of the Connecticut Society SAR, and we fired a musket salute to the heroes of Bunker Hill.

This was our 11th year participating in these ceremonies at Bunker Hill.

I would like to thank the following members for
participating:

Bonnie Burke - Camp-Follower
Lee Gerlander - 11th Conn.
Todd Gerlander - 11th Conn.
Randy Gerlander - 11th Conn.
Norm Gilman - 11th Conn.
Bob Rivard - Huntington
Fred Rivard - Huntington
John Towle - 11th Conn.
Russell Wirtalla - 11th Conn.

We were also joined by Geoffrey Colby and his wife Liisa from VTSSAR.
The newly reformed MASSAR Color Guard also had a good showing of members.

Huntington's Regt. has a Grave Marking Event next Saturday, the 23rd. We also have the Columbia Independence Day Parade, Wednesday, July 4th. We also have our GRAND ENCAMPMENT of the Connecticut Line CTSSAR July 14 & 15 at the Wadsworth Stable in Lebanon. I expect to see a great turnout of members from EVERY Detachment.

4th of July Cookout

I hope everyone is having a safe and happy 4th of July.

We had a great time as usual at our cookout at the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse in East Haddam. There was so much food. 35 members and family attended with a few visitors to the schoolhouse too. Ted Nelson was the grillmaster once more and everyone brought great food for all to enjoy.

DSCN1349.JPG

Our president Jerry Carroon was here and was able to catchup on signing membership certificates for our most recent members. The Rivard's made it after marching in the Columbia Parade earlier in the day. Even our long time Chancellor, Jay Jackson was able to join us this year.

Bud Hall rang the church bell 13 times at 2pm as is tradition around the country. And the rain did hold off.

We'll see you next year.

Patriotically,
Stephen Shaw

X-tra Special THANKS to Sergeant Michael Chuckta for providing the dinner saturday evening. THREE HUZZAHS for an AWESOME dinner! Also a GREAT breakfast!

John Towle from the 11th Conn. Regt. and Camp-Follower Bonnie Burke also stopped by for a visit Saturday evening.

We also met a new member, Bruce Cunard, who will be joining us in the field soon.

I was very happy with member turnout, 3 out of the 4 Connecticut Line Detachments were represented. Good Show!

We held the event as part of the Town of Lebanon's "Second Saturday" activities.

The encampment took place on the grounds of the Governor Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. House/Wadsworth Stable in Lebanon, CT., which is owned and maintained by the Connecticut Daughters of the American Revolution.

The members of the Connecticut Line were very happy with the event and location, and we will be returning again next year.

I have included some photos, and I will post more on our website:

International Federation of Rowing Associations - FISA Visits the Nathan Hale School in East Haddam

On July 25th, 75 members of FISA stopped to visit the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse for their lunch break. This group plus 10 support people were near the completion of rowing the entire Connecticut River from New Hampshire to Old Saybrook, CT.

DSCN1358_sm.jpgThese rowers from 17 different countries were not competing, but were on vacation. I understand from many other them that in the US the sport is very different by being competitive and typically solitary. In the rest of the world rowing groups of five per boat are very common and tours of different waterways are a regular occurrence.

They enjoyed the river views and the history of the first school that our state hero taught at.

The twenty riders toured the schoolhouse before heading off towards Vanilla Bean in Pomfret. On the way they will go by nine other little schoolhouses in the Northeast corner of Connecticut.

A little more then two dozen people visited the War Office today. I will bring photos to the State Meeting on the 29th, of both the ceremony and the Display.

These awards are for member/Detachment participation at Connecticut Line events, the events that each of you vote on at our annual meeting. I will post the current results shortly. Nathan Hale - New Book and Film

Exciting news for Connecticut's State Hero. Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the option to produce a film about Nathan Hale. The new book is being written by M. William Phelps and is due to be released in Fall 2008.

The storyline covers Hales last three years from 1773 to 1776. When he graduated from Yale College in September 1773, he took his first job as a teacher in East Haddam and then a second teaching job in New London. The Connecticut SAR owns and operates both schoolhouses as museums.

Nathan Hale Restoration - New London 1/27/2008

Compatriots,

I'm amazed at how much we accomplished today.

With eight volunteers for six hours, we just tore through one project after another. We did things which we hadn't even planned on yet, but were due to be completed.

Accomplished on the 1st floor:

Remove nails leftover from second layer of flooring.
Scrape pealing and cracked paint from ceiling and walls.
Remove nails and cleanup the basement stairwell.
Reopen all windows.
Remove old weights from windows.
Scrape paint from windows.
Remove unneeded hardware from windows.
Remove old unused lock from front door.

Accomplished in the basement:

Loaded old flooring into truck to haul away.
Removed old spacer boards from ceiling.
Load new beams into basement, which will be used later.
Brace up floor as needed.

The great volunteers for the day were:

Stephen Marshall
Stephen Shaw
Tim Jacobs
Harding Dies
Jim Klaneski
Bill Fredericks
And from the Coast Guard Academy
Cadet Lelea Littlefield
Cadet Sullivan

Everyone worked so hard.

The next stages are for Stephen Marshall to repair the posts and beams for the flooring structure and send out paint samples so we can determine the original colors. He will then put down the new flooring on the first floor.

Once that is done, then we will need volunteers to cleanup the walls and ceiling before the painting begins.

Patriotically,

Stephen P. Shaw

Nathan Hale Schoolhouse Projects

Compatriots,

We had another great weekend of work at the two schoolhouses.

In New London on Saturday, we prepared more of the surfaces with primer, sanding, plaster, wood filler and so on. We even had six visitors.

Our volunteers were:
Harry Clarke
Bruce Cunard
Tim Jacobs
Stephen Marshall
Stephen Shaw

In East Haddam on Sunday in the cold, we gave all the wall surfaces a fresh coat of paint. We have no idea when it was last painted, but we think it was in the late 60's when the museum was last rehabbed. This schoolhouse is now ready to be opened for the season and waiting for the new exhibits.

nathan_hale_school_eh.jpg
The volunteers were:
Damien Cregeau
Pamela Hall
Stephen Marshall
Frederick Rivard
Thomas Smith
Stephen Shaw

I can't tell you how proud I am of the dedication of our volunteers to help us preserve our Revolutionary War history for future generations.

On Sunday, April 13th and April 20th at 9am in New London we have a lot of painting to do. So far we have eleven volunteers which include cadets from the Coast Guard Academy. This is the final two days to be ready for May 1st. If you would like to help, please let me know or just stop by.

Patriotically,

Stephen P. Shaw

Painting in New London

Compatriots,

100_3021.JPGThe painting is looking wonderful at the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse in New London. With everything all cleaned up the room just seems so much bigger.

With the help of nine volunteers, we put a final coat on the ceiling and the walls and put a primer coat on the windows and trim.

The paint colors are now historically correct. The multiple paint samples which were sent out for analysis resulted in an off white color for the walls and a light grey on the trim.

Thank you so much to our members and the Coast Guard Cadets who helped:

Cadet Katie Colella
Bruce Cunard
Daniel Davis
Tim Jacobs
Cadet Mike Haas
Steve Marshall
Cadet Lauren Power
Stephen Shaw
Thomas Smith

Sunday April 20th will be our last day of major painting. We will likely have a minor day of fine tuning and cleanup on April 27th.

Patriotically,

Stephen P. Shaw

Restoration in New London Schoolhouse - April 20th

Compatriots,

The Nathan Hale Schoolhouse is getting so close. The restoration of the first floor is almost complete and will be ready to be opened on April 26th when 700 Coast Guard Cadets parade up State Street.

100_3033.JPG
Twelve of us did more and more detail work. It's amazing how many little items can take a chunk of time; such as filling in the holes where the pulleys had been for the old rope and weight windows (eleven of them) and the trim work on the new mantel which needed to be scribed into the stone fireplace. Tom Smith is a tremendous painter.

We touched up the ceiling and wall paint, put a second coat of the paint on the windows and chair rails and corner casements, a primer coat on the baseboard and mantel, a final coat on the walls and stairs of the stairwell, cleaned out the basement, swept and vacuumed the first floor, moved the larger furniture from the second floor to the first, sanded the stair rail and table top and much more. It's amazing how much you can get done with the help of six Coast Guard Cadets. And we found out that Cadet Higbie and Cadet Schwartz are both SAR members in other state societies.

I wish to thank the following for all the help:

100_3035.JPG
Bruce Cunard
Daniel Davis
Cadet Mike Gordon
Cadet Mike Higbie
Tim Jacobs
Stephen Marshall
Cadet Shae Quinn
Cadet Kaelon Russell
Cadet John Schwartz

Cadet Adam Tanner

We will be at the schoolhouse again on April 27th at 9am to finish things off. If you can help, please let me know.

Compatriots,

Thanks to so many people the painting of the first floor in New London is complete.

On Sunday, April 27th, we had ten volunteers including three more Cadets from the Coast Guard Academy. We put the final coats of paint on the baseboard, mantel and doors, scraped all the windows, washed all windows on the inside and some on the outside with the help of a tall Cadet and touched up the paint here and there. We even had enough extra hands to remove the hardware from the windows on the second floor.

Now everything is stored safely in a storage unit behind the train station, so that the schoolhouse can be moved in a few weeks to our new location. In a couple of months we’ll move everything back in.

Bunker Hill Burials Located

A curator from Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia has collaborated with a Charlestown historian to determine the site where one or two dozen British soldiers were buried. They wish to use ground-penetrating radar to inspect a number of sites stretching down Concord Street from Monument Square. Families living over the sites, however, are conflicted about the discovery, and the possible problems further research will create for them.

Connecticut Line CTSSAR - REPORT - Patriot's Day Parades

Dear Compatriots of the Connecticut Line CTSSAR,

I would like to thank the 19 members who came out and marched with the
Connecticut Line CTSSAR in the parades yesterday commemorating PATRIOT'S DAY
in Concord and Lexington.

I would also like to give a HUZZAH!!! to all the members, particularly those
who were on the road as early as 3:30 AM in order to make these parades
yesterday.

We looked sharp! Well Done!!!

It is GREAT to see the SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION active marching in
BOTH parades commemorating the start of the AMERICAN REVOLUTION.

Although no Connecticut militia actually took park in the skirmishes at
Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. In the days immediately following,
Four Thousand Connecticut Militia did respond to the LEXINGTON ALARM, and
"marched for the relief of Boston".

It was in one of these eyewitness accounts, a letter written in
Wethersfield, Connecticut on April 23, 1775 that reads,

"We are all in motion here, and equipt from the Town yesterday, one hundred
young men, who cheerfully offered their service, twenty-days provision and
sixty-four rounds per man. They are well armed and in high spirits. My
brother has gone with them and others of the first property. Our neighboring
towns are all arming and moving. Men of the first character shoulder their
arms and march off for the field of action. We shall by night have several
thousands from this Colony on their march . . . . . We fix on our Standards
and Drums the Colony Arms, with the motto "Qui Transtulit Sustinet", round
it in letters of gold, which we construe thus; 'God, who transplanted us
hither, will support us.'"

Once again . . . Connecticut answered the call and helped to commemorate
those men who "Nob'ly Dared to be Free".

Town of Wallingford Rededication to the Birthplace of Lyman Hall

Dear Compatriots,

A great dedication to signer Lyman Hall was made possible by the restoration of the site of Hall's birthplace and childhood home by Boy Scout Troop 4 Chris Farrell for his Eagle Scout project.
CTSSAR Wadsworth Branch members William Bone, his Uncle Charles Lewis and Damien Cregeau were joined by Bill's wife, Kathy (DAR), and Damien's wife, Pamela Hall, at the Lyman Hall Monument Dedication. Also in attendance were several ladies from the DAR, the president of the CTSCAR, Wallingford's Mayor Dickinson, the Wallingford Historical Society, a member of the Wallingford Town Council, and other residents and Boy Scouts .
The dedication, which took place on Saturday, May 23rd at the site of Lyman Hall's birthplace and childhood home in Wallingford, CT, celebrated the life of Hall, who as a representative of Georgia, was a signer of The Declaration of Independence. I believe it was Mayor Dickinson who made the excellent point that Lyman's roots as a New Englander formed the basis for his willingness to risk his reputation and life in signing The Declaration.

Patriotically, Damien Cregeau
President, Col. Jeremiah Wadsworth Branch, CTSSAR

The Town of Wallingford held a rededication ceremony of the Lyman Hall Monument on May 23, 2009. Boy Scout Troop 4 (St . Paul's Church) recently landscaped the existing monument area. Some of the new improvements include a brick walkway, sign, shrubs and a bench. They also painted the flagpole and wrought iron fence. This project was part of Chris Farrell’s Eagle Project. The monument is located directly across from Pat Wall Field (next to 355 South Elm Street) in Wallingford.

Revolutionary War Veteran From Connecticut Honored In Michigan

By JESSE LEAVENWORTH, The Hartford Courant, July 10, 2009

When the alarm at Lexington was sounded in 1775, Daniel Throop of Lebanon was among the Connecticut men who hurried north to join the fray.

Throop, who became a captain in the Connecticut Light Horse Militia, survived the Revolutionary War, and like many other veterans, headed into the western frontier. He bought land in southeastern Michigan and died in November 1833 at age 85.

Thereafter, Throop (pronounced "Troop") faded into the well of history, one name among thousands in the relatively scant military records of a fledgling nation. Now, his name and patriotism have been resurrected in a well-meaning, but not altogether accurate, dedication.

On July 3 at Judd Cemetery in Michigan's York Township, Throop's new gravestone was unveiled with music, speeches and military honors.

"Once we found out that Capt. Throop answered the call to the Battle of Lexington, the first battle of the Revolution, it just grew," said Fred Veigel, a veteran and union leader in Michigan who raised donations for the stone. "There was no way we could just place a small marker."

The effort started in 2007 when an official with the Sons of the American Revolution spotted a small Daughters of the American Revolution marker and sought information on the war veteran buried in the cemetery south of Ann Arbor. The request was relayed to Veigel.

The cemetery held a broken gravestone bearing the name "Dan Throop," but that Throop died in 1847 at age 73 -- young enough to be the elder Throop's son, but too young to be a Son of Liberty. However, near that snapped gravestone was the metal DAR marker. It seemed possible that the patriot Throop was buried next to a younger relative in an unmarked grave.

Veigel got word out to veterans groups and union members. Elmer White, a Vietnam-era veteran, lawyer and historian, and Gary Lillie, a veteran of the Vietnam War, became the principal researchers. They discovered that Throop's descendantswere responsible for getting the DAR marker placed in the 1920s, White said. Further research showed that a Daniel Throop had purchased 145 acres nearby in what is now Milan, Mich., he said.

The trail led to archives in the Connecticut State Library, where the "Record of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution" listed Daniel Throop as a captain in the 2nd Regiment, Light Horse Militia. The Sons of the American Revolution confirmed for The Courant that they have a record listing a Daniel Throop who was born in Connecticut in 1748 and died in Michigan in 1833. Judd Cemetery records had been lost in a fire in the 1950s, but White said he found proof that the Throop family had purchased a plot in the cemetery, and that there was a grave in that plot next to the grave of the younger Dan Throop, who was actually the veteran Throop's nephew.

"Based on all research done, we can say Daniel Throop lies here," Veigel told a crowd of about 300 people at the unveiling ceremony, according to the Ann Arbor News.

White, a trial lawyer for 45 years, said he believes "beyond a reasonable doubt" that the grave is Throop's. Veigel said in a recent interview that the cost of making absolutely sure by digging up the body was prohibitive. In any case, Lillie said, the bones have likely dissolved into the soil.

Martha Churchill, a Michigan-based free-lance writer and historian, wrote recently in the Milan News Leader that she could find no evidence that the patriot Daniel Throop is buried in Judd Cemetery. Churchill declared flatly that Veigel and his researchers had made a well-meaning mistake. White countered in a recent interview that Churchill missed records he found.

Beyond that dispute, however, the inscriptions on the gravestone are certainly incorrect, said Sal Tarantino, who heads a ceremonial Revolutionary War unit based on Connecticut's storied 2nd Continental Light Dragoons.

The inscription says, "Captain Throop answered the call and led his troops at the Battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775." But the official record in "Rolls and Lists of Connecticut Men in the Revolution -- 1775-1783" lists Throop among soldiers and officers who marched from Connecticut on April 22.

The battles at Lexington and Concord were fought mostly by Massachusetts men. Communication was slow in those days. Militia and farmers and anyone else inclined to kill Redcoats streamed from Connecticut and other New England states into the Boston area days after the alarm, and many of those men -- probably Throop included, Tarantino said -- fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill in mid-June.

More incorrect information is inscribed on the back side of the stone, Tarantino said. The stone says Throop's unit served as Gen. George Washington's bodyguards and that the unit made the first cavalry charge in American history. The Michigan researchers confused the 2nd Regiment of the Connecticut Light Horse Militia with the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons, the actual "Avenging Angels" that the stone ascribes to the Light Horse Militia, Tarantino said.

Asked if the inscriptions would be corrected, White said probably not.

"Our heart is in the right place," he said. "If you get too down on this, people are going to be afraid to do these kinds of ceremonies."

"I think the point all of us wanted to make was to remember American history and the American soldier," White wrote in an e-mail.

Memorial for the Burning of Norwalk

Press Release - YourCT.com

Victims of the Burning of Norwalk Remembered

The Norwalk Historical Society will present a memorial for all victims of the Burning of Norwalk - American or British, soldier or civilian - on The Green near the cannon at 7:00 pm on Friday, July 10. The memorial will be led by Eric Chandler of Sheldon's Horse, the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons who will conduct a Libation Ceremony, as a tribute to the fallen. Reenactors in American and British 18th Century uniform will participate in the ceremony. Mayor Moccia will read a proclamation designating July 10 - 12 as the Commemoration of the Battle and Burning of Norwalk.

Also participating in the memorial will be The Connecticut Line, the Living History Color Guard Unit of the Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and DeLancey's Brigade. Madeleine Eckert, Norwalk Historical Society Advisory Board Member and member of the Norwalk-Village Green Chapter, Connecticut State Society Daughters of the American Revolution will speak about the significance of the Norwalk DAR monuments and highlight the dedication of the Tryon / Grumman's Hill monument. Ed Eckert, Norwalk Historical Society Board Member and member of the Roger Sherman Branch #5, CTSSAR will be speaking about Patriot casualties.

The Battle of Norwalk may be the biggest battle fought in Connecticut during the Revolutionary War and Norwalk suffered more destruction than any other town in the state. One hundred thirty homes, forty shops, one hundred barns, five ships, two churches, and some flour mills and salt works were also lost. "The Green is really sacred ground. A few American regulars and a lot of citizen soldiers, just regular people trying to protect their homes and families, fought here and in other parts of town against overwhelming odds," said Tod Bryant of the Norwalk Historical Society. "All of the combatants were doing their duty as they saw it and all of them deserve to be remembered."

The Norwalk Historical Society was incorporated in 1899 with the purpose of promoting and encouraging historical research in Norwalk. That vision is kept alive today with the re-establishment of the NHS in 1949 and the continued focus on "the research, preservation, and promotion of interest in the history of Norwalk."

For more information, please call the Norwalk Historical Society at 203-846-0525 or email info@norwalkhistoricalsociety.org. For more information about the Norwalk Historical Society, please visit the NHS website at www.norwalkhistoricalsociety.org.

All donations received will be used to fund the programs of the Norwalk Historical Society.

Reenactors set for Battle and Burning of Norwalk

As reported by the Connecticut Post, 7/7/09

Every five years, during the second weekend of July, Eric Chandler dons a swallow-tail coat and brass helmet, grabs his Charleville musket and joins dozens of other soldiers in the Norwalk Town Militia to stop the invading forces of His Royal Majesty's Crown.

Fortunately for the Norwalk resident, he never has to fire a bullet.

That's because the clash is actually a re-enactment of the Battle and Burning of Norwalk, a Revolutionary War conflict that saw the deaths of dozens of American soldiers and destruction of more than 200 homes, barns and shops at the hands of British forces July 11 and 12, 1779.

Though there won't be a genuine armed conflict, Chandler and his fellow re-enactors are dedicated to making the event as realistic and historically accurate as possible.

"What happened here and elsewhere during the War for Independence was deadly serious," said Chandler, a Norwalk resident who has been participating in

re-enactments for more than 30 years. "We don't mock that during the course of the weekend."

Taking place Friday through Sunday at Norwalk's Taylor Farm, the 230th anniversary celebration includes more than 130 re-enactors in American and British units. Soldiers will fire flintlocks and cannons (with gun powder only) and charge into battle on horseback. British soldiers will even torch artificial buildings to simulate the destruction of the town.

"All the participants take re-enacitng very seriously," said Rachelle

Hayes of Celebrate the Past, Inc., organizers of the event. "Participants will draw straws to see who will be casualties. Soldiers are going to drop down dead."

The festivities will begin Friday with a memorial service on the Town Green for veterans and descendants of the Battle of Norwalk, followed by a mock meeting of the Town Committee of Safety, the body that requested aid from Gen. George Washington to help stave off the British.

On Saturday, visitors will be invited to the makeshift camps to interact with soldiers, who will cook meals in braziers over open fire pits and perform drills and demonstrations of military arts and crafts. An officers' meeting and the burning of the town will follow.

The event will continue Sunday with an 18th-century church service and a cavalry demonstration by Chandler's unit, The Sheldon's Horse, Second Regiment, Continental Light Dragoons. Festivities will conclude with a recreation of the Battle of The Rocks, the point at which two columns of British soldiers converged and proceeded north to the area known as The Rocks -- at France and Cannon Street -- where they encountered heavy resistance from roughly 800 Continental troops.

According to Norwalk historian Ed Eckert, the battle was the conclusion of a "week of terror" that started with a British attack on New Haven July 5 and continued down the Gold Coast until the strike on Norwalk six days later. At the time, Eckert said, Norwalk was a hotbed of military activity, with both sides committing acts of privateering, espionage and kidnappings.

"Long Island was controlled by the British and the Tories, so Norwalk was constantly at battle with their neighbors across the Sound," said Eckert, who, along with his wife, Madeleine, have been advisors to Celebrate the Past for seven years. "There were cannons pointing in both directions."

According to Eckert, the attack on Norwalk had three goals: first, to instill fear in American citizens to make them loyal to the king; second, to destroy a strategic supply depot; and third, to draw Washington and his troops out of the Hudson highlands to defeat them.

The battle saw skirmishes on both sides of the Norwalk River -- with fighting on Flax Hill; East, West and North avenues; and Mill Hill -- and culminated in the five-hour Battle of the Rocks, which saw a stalemate and subsequent British retreat and burning of the town. Despite the tragic loss, the battle only "increased the resolve of Connecticut citizens," Eckert said. The British, meanwhile, had failed to lure Washington out of the highlands.

The re-enactors, who come from across New England, muster inspiration from this storied history. Chandler first became involved in 1974, after reading an article in The Advocate requesting participants in a Revolutionary War re-enactment at Ridgefield's bicentenntial celebration. He's been hooked ever since.

"I got bitten by the history bug," Chandler recalled. "We need to honor not just current veterans, but everybody who has shed blood on behalf of the American flag."

Taylor Farm is at the intersection of Calf Pasture Beach Road and Canfield Avenue, Norwalk. Event: Friday 1-7:30 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and Sunday 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Free parking is available at Marvin School on Calf Pasture Beach Road, Norwalk. www.celebratethepastinc.com.

Connecticut Line CTSSAR - REPORT - Westbrook, CT Grave Marking Ceremony

I want to thank all Connecticut Line members that helped with this grave marking.

We had Webb's 7th, the 9th and one at large.

It was a great success as you can read for yourself from the letter we got from Compatriot Lay at the bottom of my report.

Let us also thank Captain Bruce Cunard for his patriotic service in the best branch of all, The United States Navy!

You may be able to tell I was a Navy Man myself, it was, if I can remember, during the War of 1812?

Of course, we did not have the fancy subs like they have now.
We used an old bath tub, turned it upside down and you would hold your breath.

List of CT Line members that participated.

Harry Clarke, Col. Webb's 7th CT Regt.
Dan Dudley, Col. Webb's 7th CT Regt.
Bob Lasprogato, 9th CT Militia Regt.
     Bob Rivard, At-large
Jim Rothgreb, Col. Webb's 7th CT Regt.
Tyler Smith, Col. Webb's 7th CT Regt.

The weather was improving from a solid rain to showers, later it improved rapidly to an overcast sky and a seasonably cool day.

I arrived at 1:45 to find Compatriot Lay and his brother at the grave site, the other members of the Connecticut Line soon followed.

We reviewed the various tasks to be done and jointly decided on a course of action to arrive at the best possible outcome.

I recommended that we take the flags down the outside of the grave yard and march in with the flags first and muskets behind, this we did.

The colors were placed and the muskets were over to the side so as to be able to do an about face and fire a salute away from the crowd, this we did.

Speaking first was Compatriot C. Francis Lay followed by the pledge of allegiance and the benediction.

There were about 5 speakers including myself and Bob Rivard. After Bob Rivard spoke I was asked to introduce the members of our team. I suggested to Compatriot Lay that it might be better to allow the individual members to come up to the podium, introduce themselves and give a comment, this we did.

As the weather continued to improve I decided to go ahead and have the salute after the marker was uncovered,  just prior to taps being played.

We then retired the colors and marched back out and down the outside of the grave yard retracing the same steps we had taken earlier. We later returned to pickup the spent cartridges.

Bob Rivard, Bob Lasprogato and I followed the family over to the Westbrook Historical Society for refreshments and to pose for a photo.

After the photo was taken it was about 5 pm so we thanked Compatriot Lay for the opportunity to assist him and wished him a safe trip home.

I have included several photos for your review. I copied them from a PDF file that was sent to me by Compatriot Lay, they have been enhanced and converted to JPG file format. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Respectfully Submitted,

THREE HUZZAHS to the Hale, Putnam, Sherman and Wadsworth Branches for answering the alarm and sending members. THREE HUZZAHS to the following:

01)Wayne Bickley - Putnam
02)George Crede - Putnam
03)Damien Cregeau - Wadsworth
04)Bruce Cunard - Hale

17)John Towle - Putnam
18)Russell Wirtalla - Putnam
19)Bonnie Burke - Camp-Follower
20)Pam Hall - Camp-Follower
21)Cece Messier - Camp-Follower

Originally, we were going to set up on Friday afternoon, but the weather forecasts were saying that Friday was going to be the worst of the days for weather, so we cancelled Friday set-up. We started out Saturday at 8:00 AM in the pouring rain, slowly setting up the camp during each break in the rain showers. By noon, most of the rain was gone and we were able to roast the 3 whole chickens and 12 pound pork loin. I must say, they came out great, poultry is usually tricky, but they cooked well on the spit. I think we all agree on that. Mike picked up some local Lebanon "just picked" corn at the Farmer's Market, which was steamed over the coals, tasted Great!
Bruce then baked some apples for dessert.

THREE HUZZAHS again to Compatriot John Kendall for providing the fire wood for the encampment.

Saturday overall was a good day. We probably should have turned the event into a one day event because of the rain. Only 5 of us stayed overnight, and there was a little more rain.

Being the last to leave, I pulled out of the site at 2:00 PM on Sunday afternoon.

GREAT photos are up on our unit website, www.ConnecticutLine.org

Just a reminder that reenactor registration for the 2009 Boston Tea Party this December starts TODAY.

New and Free DAR Online Databases

The following announcement was written by the Daughters of the American Revolution:

After nearly a decade of scanning, indexing, and other behind-the-scenes work by DAR members and employees, the Daughters of the American Revolution is pleased to announce the availability of the DAR Genealogical Research System on our public website. Here are the direct links:

http://www.dar.org/library/online_research.cfm or www.dar.org (and click on the Library button at the top, then the second tab in the left-hand column).

The GRS is a growing collection of databases that provide access to many materials collected by the DAR over the past 119 years. Included in this collection of databases is the GRC National Index which has been available to researchers for the past few years. There are still some kinks we're working out here and there.

When you go to the link above, you will find several tabs that will enable searching in the various databases:

Ancestor - established DAR Revolutionary War Ancestors and basic information about them with listings of the applications submitted by descendants who joined the DAR [updated daily]

Member - limited access to information on deceased/former DAR members - not current members.

Descendants - index of generations in applications between the DAR member and the Revolutionary War ancestor. There is much eighteenth and nineteenth-century information here. [ongoing indexing project]

GRC- everyname index to 20,000 typescript volumes (some still being indexed) of genealogical records such as cemeteries, Bibles, etc. This index is not limited to the period of the American Revolution at all.

Resources [In particular, the digitized DAR Library Revolutionary Pension Extract Card Index and the Analytical Index Cards.

Other information sources will be coming in the near future, mostly relating to Revolutionary War service, bibliographies, Forgotten Patriots (updates), etc. Read the introductions to these to learn why these are both important genealogical indexes. For example, the Rev. War pension index includes the names of people mentioned in those pensions that were abstracted (not just the pensioner or widow)!!!!]

Library Catalog - our book, periodical, and manuscript holdings

Each of these has interrelated content, and a description of each is given more fully on the website. You will notice restricted information in many search results. This is the result of a concerted effort to protect the identity of our members while providing historical genealogical information to researchers.

The national numbers of members (without the names of living members) given in the search results are needed to order copies of applications and supplemental applications. They do not lead online researchers to any other information about the member.
